Spring enters the Fordhall landscape.

A month of new beginnings, new life and longer daylight hours, March is known for welcoming spring to the landscape – indeed it is the month containing the spring equinox. Migratory birds begin to return from overwintering in Africa, and the blooming of plants, like primroses, blackthorn blossom and daffodils, is closely followed by the reappearance of pollinators, including bee flies, hairy-footed flower bees and comma butterflies.

Of course, there is one very sweet, and quite noisy, signifier of spring in the British countryside that we all recognise – lambs! Fordhall’s flock isn’t spared this busy time of year – it never takes long for overly-energetic tiny sheep to take over the farm fields. The farm trails are free to access, and welcome picnics and well-behaved canine companions on leads. If you’re lucky, you may just spot this influx of tiny, woolly friends on your wander! Don’t forget to bring a camera with you – a spring picture might just be the star of our newly reopened calendar photo competition; to find out more, please visit: www.fordhallfarm.com/photo-competition

With birdlife getting more active this time of year, don’t forget to nip into our bird hide in the woods – we often see woodpeckers here! We’re also excited to announce that, as a part of our River-friendly farming campaign, to improve the health of the on-site water courses, we’re hoping to build a second one. This hide will reside at one of our wildlife ponds, where you can enjoy watching the feathered friends that visit. The structure will be built by the Youth Project, enabling young people to learn new skills and develop their confidence. As a not-for-profit organisation, we have the opportunity to raise the funds through Spacehive, who will match fund any donations if we are successful. To help fund this, please visit: www.spacehive.com/fordhallriverfriendly - any donation size is extremely gratefully received!

March 2025 isn’t only laying claim the equinox, but to Mother’s Day too – celebrating at Fordhall could be the extra mile that makes this day extra special for your loved ones. The Arthur’s Farm Kitchen team are busy prepping a delicious roast dinner menu, using locally sourced and organic ingredients. Available 30th March 2025, 12pm-3pm, keep an eye on our website and social media for the opening of bookings.

Whether you are celebrating or wandering, we’re looking forward to welcoming you as the seasons change!
