Dr Kevin Butt is a Reader in Ecology at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston. He has undertaken research in soil ecology, and specifically earthworms for nearly 40 years. This is because earthworms, as ecosystem service providers, are an essential component of functioning soils, vital to us all.
Dr Pia Euteneuer is an agricultural researcher at BOKU University in Vienna (Austria). Earthworms have been the focus of her research for several years. For her, the earthworm symbolises the potential of ecosystem services and the interplay between soil biology, soil physics and soil chemistry for sustainable and climate-adapted crop production. A current research project is "SoilRise- Monitoring soil biota by citizen science" http://www.soilrise.eu/
